Why go
This stretch of the [south-central coast](destinations/vietnam) sits in a rain shadow that gives it a different, drier calendar to the rest of the country, which is why it built a beach-tourism economy around it. The city itself is more resort strip than heritage town — the appeal is the water rather than the streets.
What sets it apart from other Vietnamese beach towns is the depth of things to do offshore: a cluster of islands close enough for a half-day boat trip, calm and shallow enough that snorkelling doesn't require any real experience, plus a couple of dive schools running certification courses for anyone who wants to go further.
Things to do
Island-hopping boat trip
Hon Mun is the pick for snorkelling, with a marine protected area and the clearest water of the group; a typical day trip strings together two or three islands by boat, with a stop for lunch on the water or a beach.
Vinpearl cable car to Hon Tre
A sea-crossing cable car — one of the longer ones over open water in the region — connects the mainland to Hon Tre island, home to a resort and amusement park that's a straightforward half-day out for families.
Po Nagar Cham Towers
A cluster of red-brick towers on a hill above the Cai River, built by the Champa kingdom from around the 8th century onward and still an active place of worship. It's one of the few sites in the city with any real age to it.
Thap Ba mineral mud baths
Warm mud pools fed by mineral springs, a popular half-day stop that's easy to combine with the Cham towers nearby since both sit on the same side of the river.
Long Son Pagoda
A working Buddhist temple with a large white Buddha statue visible from much of the city, reached by a steep set of steps that also gives a wide view back over the rooftops toward the sea.
When to go
January through August is the dry season here, unusually reliable for Vietnam and the reason the city built its tourism industry around beach days and boat trips. September through December brings the rains, heaviest and most likely to include a typhoon in October and November, when island boat trips are sometimes cancelled for rough seas.
Getting there and around
Cam Ranh International Airport sits about 40 minutes south of the city by road, with direct flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City taking roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. An overnight train or sleeper bus from Ho Chi Minh City is the road option, at around 8 to 9 hours. Downtown is walkable along the beach road, with boats to the islands departing from the main harbour.
