Three countries, three different trips
Vietnam stretches close to 1,650 kilometres from its northern hills to the Mekong Delta, with over 3,000 kilometres of coast along the way. A route here tends to move fast — mountains one week, an old citadel city the next, a beach or a delta boat ride after that — because the regions genuinely look and feel different from one another.
Laos runs at a different speed. It has no coastline, fewer roads, and a Mekong that shapes most of its towns, so trips here slow down around river journeys and temple mornings rather than city-hopping. Cambodia sits between the two: [Siem Reap](destinations/siem-reap) pulls visitors in for Angkor alone, while [Phnom Penh](destinations/phnom-penh) and the southern coast round out a trip that can run from ancient ruins to island time in under two weeks.

When to go
The three countries don't share one calendar. Vietnam's north, centre and south each run on their own weather pattern, Laos splits cleanly into a cool dry season and a wet one, and Cambodia's dry months line up closely with Laos but shift a few weeks earlier at the start of the rains.
| Country | Driest, coolest months | Wettest months | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vietnam | Varies by region — north Oct–Apr, south Dec–Apr | North: winter drizzle; south: May–Nov afternoon rain | No single month suits the whole country at once |
| Laos | November to February | June to September | March and April turn hot and hazy before the rains |
| Cambodia | November to March | June to October | April and May are the hottest months, just before the rains break |
Crossing all three inside one trip usually means accepting rain somewhere on the route. November through February is the closest thing to a shared dry window, which is why most multi-country itineraries are built around those months.
How long do you need
A single country deserves at least a week; stretching one country and a neighbour into a fortnight is realistic without feeling rushed. [Vietnam Compact](tours/vietnam-compact) covers south, centre and north in seven days using short domestic flights, while [Beauty of Vietnam](tours/beauty-of-vietnam) takes fifteen days to cover similar ground overland with more stops built in.
Covering all three countries properly needs closer to three weeks. [Discovery Indochina](tours/discovery-indochina) runs nineteen days through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, roughly the shortest workable version of a trip that touches all three without cutting any one of them down to a single overnight stop.

Getting between the three
Direct flights connect Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Vientiane and Luang Prabang, so a multi-country route rarely needs more than one short flight between stops. Overland border crossings exist too — Laos into Cambodia along the Mekong, or Cambodia into Vietnam near the delta — and suit travellers who'd rather watch the country change through a bus window than skip over it.
