A four-day route through Saigon's history, Tay Ninh's temples and the Mekong Delta

A short, focused loop out of Ho Chi Minh City: the Cu Chi tunnels and a cable car above Tay Ninh on day two, a Cao Dai noon service on the way, then a Mekong Delta boat morning before flying home. Built for travellers with a long weekend rather than weeks to spare.

Trip overview

This is a base-city itinerary: you keep the same hotel in [Ho Chi Minh City](destinations/ho-chi-minh-city) for three nights and take day trips out to the sites that matter, rather than packing and repacking a bag. It works well for a stopover, a long weekend extension, or a first taste of the south before a longer Vietnam trip.

The theme running through it is wartime history balanced against everyday river life — tunnels and a war museum on one day, a bronze Buddha statue and Cao Dai worship on the next, then orchards and folk songs on the Mekong on the third. It suits travellers who want substance over a checklist of photo stops.

Each day runs on a private car and guide, so pace stays flexible even with a packed schedule across the four days.

Highlights

  • A walk through the Cu Chi tunnel network dug by hand during the war
  • The Independence Palace and War Remnants Museum on your first afternoon in the city
  • A cable car ride to the summit of Ba Den mountain, home to Asia's tallest bronze Buddha statue
  • A midday service at the Cao Dai Holy See, a faith blending Buddhist, Christian and Taoist elements
  • An orchard stop on Thoi Son island in the Mekong Delta, with honey tea and live folk music
  • A rickshaw loop past Saigon's French colonial landmarks

Day by day

Day 1 — Ho Chi Minh City: war history and colonial landmarks

Arrive and settle into your hotel, with the morning free to rest. From noon, a guide takes you to the Independence Palace, the site where the Vietnam War formally ended, followed by the War Remnants Museum.

The afternoon rounds out with the city's French colonial face: the Opera House, the Continental Hotel dating to 1880, the Gustave Eiffel-designed Central Post Office, and the neoclassical Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, finished with a cyclo ride through downtown streets.

Meals: none included.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 2 — Cu Chi Tunnels, Cao Dai Temple and Ba Den mountain

Morning is spent inside the Cu Chi tunnel system, the hand-dug network that sheltered guerrilla fighters for years. Exhibits and guides walk through how the tunnels were built, hidden and lived in.

From Cu Chi, the drive continues to Tay Ninh province, headquarters of the Cao Dai faith — a religion drawing on Buddhist, Christian and Taoist belief, marked by the divine eye above its temple entrance. Time the arrival for noon, when followers gather inside for their midday worship and visitors can watch from the gallery above.

A cable car then carries you up Ba Den mountain's summit, where a black bronze Buddha statue, the tallest in Asia, stands with views stretching toward the Cambodian border. The evening is free back at the hotel.

Meals: breakfast.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 3 — Mekong Delta: My Tho and Thoi Son island

A roughly two-hour drive south takes you through green countryside to My Tho, a delta town known for producing much of the country's fruit, rice and coconuts. Vinh Trang Pagoda, its walls pieced together from broken pottery shards, opens the day.

From there, a boat crosses the Mekong past floating fishing hamlets to Thoi Son island, where a rowed sampan, seasonal fruit, honey tea, coconut candy and live folk songs fill the late morning. Lunch follows at a garden restaurant near the pier, or on the island itself.

Meals: breakfast.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 4 — Markets and departure

The last morning is free for shopping around Ben Thanh market and the malls near your hotel before a transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Standard hotel timing applies: check-in from 2pm, check-out by noon.

Good to know

  • The Cu Chi tunnel section involves stooping and a short crawl in low light; you can stay above ground and skip it if that is not for you.
  • The War Remnants Museum covers the conflict in direct, sometimes graphic terms — worth knowing before you bring children along.
  • October to April is the driest window for this route; outside it, expect afternoon showers on the Mekong Delta boat trip.
  • Dress modestly for the Cao Dai noon service — shoulders and knees covered — and keep noise down once inside the temple hall.

Pair this trip with a longer itinerary through the centre and north; see our [Vietnam Compact](tours/vietnam-compact) route or the [first-time Vietnam guide](travel-guide/vietnam-first-time-guide) for planning ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Is four days enough to see the south of Vietnam properly?
It is enough for a focused sample: Saigon's core sights, the Cu Chi tunnels, Tay Ninh's Cao Dai temple and Ba Den mountain, and a Mekong Delta morning. It is not a substitute for a longer stay if you want to add the coast or the highlands.
Do we stay in a different hotel each night?
No, this route keeps one base hotel in Ho Chi Minh City for all three nights, with day trips out and back rather than repacking each morning.
Is the Cu Chi tunnels visit suitable for children?
The above-ground exhibits work for most ages. The tunnel crawl itself is optional and can be skipped by anyone who prefers to stay at the surface displays.
What should I wear for the Cao Dai temple visit?
Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering the main hall. Photography is generally allowed from the upper gallery during the service.
Can this route be extended with a night in the Mekong Delta instead of a day trip?
Yes, tell us when you enquire and we can rework day three into an overnight stay in the delta rather than a return trip to Saigon.
Is this trip suitable as a stopover between longer Vietnam and Cambodia trips?
Yes, it is a common way to use a few spare days in Ho Chi Minh City between flights, and it can be booked as a standalone add-on to a longer Indochina itinerary.
